2017 Taylor's Ride

Dennis and Edna Taylor hosted a weekend wagon ride for the members of the Southern Indiana Draft Horse and Mule Association over the weekend of June 8-11, 2017. (Edna is the club president for 2017.) Most of the teams arrived on Thursday afternoon and there were 7 wagons hooked up and ready to go on Friday morning. We took a leisurely ride that meandered through parts of Perry and Crawford counties. Returning to the camp in the late afternoon, we had a traditional grillout dinner of hamburgers, sausages and the fixin's. On Saturday morning, Danny Sommers left to go cut hay and to attend to some family matters, but we still had 6 wagons when we departed the camp. Just like Friday, the weather was absolutely perfect with temperatures in the low 80's, minimal humidity and a nice breeze blowing. The horses and mules barely broke a sweat all day. As always with this group, the pace was kept moderate and there were plenty of stops to enjoy some camaraderie. A couple of the youngsters spent some time riding Mike's big horses bareback when we returned to camp resulting in our 2nd buckoff of the weekend. On Saturday night, the menu consisted of pork tenderloins cooked on the club's chuckwagon grill along with the other dishes contributed by the various members. One thing is for sure, if you don't get enough to eat with this group, it's your own fault. After the meal, the monthly club meeting was held and the schedule for the summer was reviewed. On Sunday morning, both Dexter and Kelly left just after sunup to head back home to the great state of Kentucky, but there were still 3 wagons ready to ride as soon as the group breakfast was eaten and the dishes were done. We only rode for a few hours, but it was great to get to enjoy what is probably one of the last mild, sunny days as we head into the heat of summer.

As always, I had a great time riding with this group. They are all very friendly and there doesn't seem to be any of the cliques that you often find when groups of people get together. All meals are prepared and eaten together with most of the food being donated by the various members. Of course, there are always a few clowns in any group and two of ours found a downed Christmas tree and decorated it so everyone could get their photo taken by the tree. The link below will take you to the photos I took on this fun weekend. Thanks to Dennis and Edna for all of their hospitality and to their friend Mick for letting us stay on his place!
